"Dark Horizon 2"
2024
Materials: silk textile, oak gall tannin, logwood, cochineal insects, iron, natural pH modifiers
Artwork Dimensions: 8 x 10"
"Dark Horizon 2" is an original textile artwork. The silk textile is dyed with oak gall tannin, and then painted with logwood dye, cochineal insect dye, iron, and natural pH modifiers. The silk is a charmeuse satin weave, so the surface has a slight sheen to it.
UNFRAMED OPTION: The silk textile is stretched and mounted around wooden canvas bars and signed at the top edge (see picture). There is no wire or hook on the back, but you can suspend as-is from a small nail or picture-hanging hook (see photos listed for reference.) Or, you can wire or frame it yourself.
FRAMED OPTION: Light oak floater frame, 8x10" with a 1 1/2" profile - sits approximately 2" from the wall, adding dramatic presence to your room. Please note there is no glass included with this type of frame, and the artwork is meant to appear "floating" within the frame, with about 1/8" space between the edge of the artwork and the frame.
Some general information about my work...
All of my artwork is created in my studio using natural fibers, and botanical dyes & pigments from plants & flowers that I either grow myself or forage locally. Occasionally I purchase pigments from other artists and growers from around the U.S. and the world. Sometimes I create pigments from organic food and compost scraps (AKA the remnants of my meals.) The color tells a story.
Please understand that this piece is made from natural botanical materials, and that the pigments may evolve or fade slightly over time due to exposure to sunlight and other environmental conditions, which is part of the artwork and ephemeral concept behind "living color." To best preserve the piece, avoid placing the artwork in a humid environment, and keep out of harsh direct sunlight.
