DATES: 7/10, SA 12-3pm est (NYC time)

WHERE: Zoom (you will receive a calendar invitation with login info)

WORKSHOP: This workshop demonstrates ways to create floral patterns and impressions on fabrics, through bundle dyeing and pounding (hapa zome) techniques. Summer is the season for foraging and working with fresh blooms, so this is a fun way to get to know the flowers and plants growing in your surrounding neighborhood or garden. These techniques offer ways to add color to old, well-worn clothes that might need a refresh, as the patterns help to disguise stains and imperfections - and distract from new ones! I will share some ways to approach these techniques, and how they can be layered to create interesting and dynamic compositions. You can also combine these techniques with those learned in other workshops I am offering this summer (painting with pH in particular is a great way to elevate your flower dyes)!

Objectives + takeaways from this workshop:
-bundle dye techniques
-flower pounding (hapa zome)
-how to combine these techniques to achieve layered compositions
-best flowers for these techniques (you will receive a list of suggested flowers to work with prior to the class, but feel free to experiment with any and all - can bring leaves or other plants too if you'd like)
-PDF with resources for purchasing fabrics + dye materials, and instructions on how to replicate these techniques in your practice moving forward
-all participants will receive access to the recorded session, so if you cannot attend at this specific time you can sign up and watch later

SUPPLY LIST:
-scoured & mordanted* fabric (recommend 1yd, or a few old garments, must be natural fibers)
-additional scrap fabric to use as press cloth (for pounding)
-various dry + fresh flowers (can be from your garden, neighborhood, local grocery store/florist/bodega)
-lemon juice or white distilled vinegar
-baking soda
-heat (stovetop or hotplates)
-access to water (tap is fine)
-pot
-strainer/steam basket for steaming bundles
-rubber bands or string for tying bundles
-metal tongs (for handling hot bundles)
-hammer/mallet
-scissors
-steam iron
-drop cloth(s) for covering workspace

*If this is your first time dyeing with natural materials, you will need to pre-fix your fabrics to prepare them for dyeing. If you are unsure of how to do this, I can direct you to some resources that will guide you through this. You can also participate or observe the workshop without pre-fixing if you'd like, but the scouring + mordanting steps will enable best results.
